Top 4 Snakes for Beginners

If you’re just starting out in the hobby, Show Me Reptiles recommends the following 4 snakes for beginners. Some key factors to keep in mind are that snakes have many different genetic morphs. These affect the size, pattern, shape, and color of snakes. Different types of snakes also require different enclosures and substrates, as well as varying feeding patterns.

Ball Pythons

  • Docile
  • Tropical Species
  • Ball themselves up for protection
  • 18-20 inches at 4 months
  • Adults are 4-5 feet long
  • At full size they will require a 36 inch long minimum enclosure, which is about 40 gallons
  • Humidity is very important, the following substrates are recommended
    • Show Me ABG
    • Show Me Coco Husk
    • Show Me Cypress
  • Babies prefer to eat live pinky mice or rats
  • Can switch to frozen/thawed as they get older to reduce risk of injury
  • Morphs and variants make some Ball Pythons extremely costly
  • Known to go on hunger strikes, which can be concerning, especially for a beginner
  • Large size can make it difficult for younger children to handle

Overall, Ball Pythons with their docile nature would make a great beginner snake. Just keep in mind the size requirements as they grow larger.

Corn Snakes

  • Docile
  • 4-5 feet long
  • At full size they will require a 36 inch long minimum enclosure, which is about 40 gallons
  • Active and can be seen moving around the enclosure more often
  • Babies can be fast and flighty
  • They musk, but they can grow out of it

Corn Snakes are another great option for beginners. They are docile, but more active in their enclosure.

Kenyan Sand Boa

  • Most manageable in size
  • Females are almost 3 feet when fully grown, which requires a 20 gallon tank
  • Males are almost 20 inches when fully grown, which requires a 10 gallon tank
  • Humidity isn't as important, the following substrates are recommended
    • Sand
    • Show Me Fresh Aspen
  • Might not always see them, as they prefer to stay hidden in the sand

The Kenyan Sand Boa is another great option for beginners, especially if size is an important factor when making a decision.

King Snakes

  • Active and love to explore, so they will always be moving around
  • Affordable and easy to come by
  • Variety of colors and morphs
  • 3-5 feet, which requires a 40 gallon tank for the larger size
  • Humidity and temperature are easier to maintain
  • Baby King Snakes can be flighty
  • They musk, but can grow out of it

King Snakes make a great option for beginners as well.

This is a great starting place for any new reptile enthusiast. Any of these 4 snakes would make a great pet. The most important part is picking one that best matches your lifestyle.
