The world of reptiles is vast and vibrant, filled with enthusiasts who share a deep love for these unique creatures. For Tommy, the founder of Reptiles Anonymous, this passion began in childhood at Wet Pets, a beloved pet store in Carrollton, Georgia. Little did he know that this early fascination would evolve into a life dedicated to breeding and caring for snakes and other reptiles.
Early Inspirations
Tommy's journey took a pivotal turn when he became friends with a local pet store owner at 16. During this time, the internet was still in its infancy, leaving many unaware of the incredible variety of reptiles available. A newsletter ad for the Florida Breeders Expo caught Tommy's eye, leading him to Orlando. There, he encountered his first visual pied—a moment that ignited his passion for breeding.
However, the path was not without obstacles. Tommy faced devastating setbacks, including the loss of his first collection due to a thermostat failure and a second collection that succumbed to a power outage during an ice storm. After a hiatus dedicated to family life—coaching sports and being a scoutmaster—Tommy felt the call to return to his passion.
Building a Legacy
With the rise of local reptile shows, Tommy began to rebuild his collection. Unfortunately, tragedy struck again when a house fire destroyed everything he had worked for. Feeling defeated, he nearly gave up on his dream. But a chance encounter at a reptile show reignited his passion when he spotted a stunning snake that he couldn’t resist. This prompted him to reach out to the breeder and eventually purchase the snake, marking the beginning of a new chapter.
Thus, Reptiles Anonymous was born, encapsulated by the slogan “We support Your Addiction.” Tommy rapidly built his reputation in the community, reaching a peak of over 500 snakes and producing more than 1,200 babies in a single year. Yet, the challenges of sourcing food for such a large collection proved daunting. Faced with personal issues and the pressures of rapid growth, Tommy decided to downsize and reevaluate his approach.
A New Chapter with a Supportive Partnership
During this challenging period, Tommy met a remarkable partner who would change everything. Together, they seized the opportunity to purchase a rattery, allowing Tommy to focus on breeding while ensuring a steady supply of food for his snakes. They’ve since doubled production and are expanding to include mice, aiming to create a leading facility for South Georgia and Alabama.
The rattery model reflects Tommy’s desire to alleviate the burdens he once faced with sourcing rats. Making it easier for breeders to access the food they need without the hassle of driving all over the city themselves. “I wish I could have had my rats show up at my front door,” he says, embodying the empathetic spirit that drives his business. All you need to do is call and schedule a drop off and the rats will be there.
Community Connections
Recently, Tommy returned to the show circuit after a year-long absence, experiencing a heartwarming reunion with fellow reptile enthusiasts. The hugs and warm welcomes reaffirmed his commitment to the community, reminding him of the friendships forged through shared passion.
Reptiles Anonymous is also exploring innovative ideas, including a new bedding product for reptiles, ensuring their commitment to quality and dependability remains at the forefront of their mission. “I want our business and reputation to be 100% about honesty and dependability,” Tommy emphasizes.
Looking Ahead
As Tommy and his family continue to build their rattery in LaGrange, Georgia, their vision remains clear: to be a reliable resource for fellow breeders and pet stores. With over 200 snakes still in their care and new projects on the horizon, the future looks bright for Reptiles Anonymous.
