Vendor Spotlight: Royal Roaches

The History of Royal Roaches

This week's Vendor Spotlight is Royal Roaches! Since 2010, this mom and pop business has been operating out of the St. Louis area. During their many years in business, they underwent some changes as they were originally known as the Outback Dragon Den. Having all of those Bearded Dragons to feed, they decided it would be best to start breeding their own Dubia Roaches for feeders. From that, Royal Roaches was born. Eventually, they felt it was best to phase out their breeding of Bearded Dragons and focus on roaches.

Collaborating with Show Me Reptiles

In around 2016, the company's owners met Micky Meyers. Royal Roaches started vending in St. Louis at their Show Me Reptile Show. This was a great opportunity for Royal Roaches, who credits the show with taking their business to a whole new level. Although it was a lot of work for the company, they found it to be very rewarding.

Creating an Online Presence

Like many small businesses, Royal Roaches was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. They decided to put vending shows to a halt. Trying to make the best out of their situation, Royal Roaches created their own website. They now work full time to bring the best feeder roaches to their customers. Royal Roaches have their own commercial space, and were able to expand their business to include breeding geckos as well. They primarily sell their geckos at reptile shows and online under the name Great Gatsby Geckos.

Advice for the Reptile Community

Royal Roaches recommends that anyone interested in becoming a breeder or a vendor take the time to think their decision through and network with others in the community. Mike says that “finding your passion is important. When the going gets tough, you can’t forget why you are doing this in the first place.” It is crucial that we support our local vendors, whether that is at reptile shows or online.

The next date Royal Roaches will be vending is July 9th in Kansas City for the Show Me Reptiles and Exotics Show. Mike says, “Give Royal Roaches a try...let us treat you and your reptiles...like KINGS!”
