A Lifelong Passion for Reptiles
A lifelong passion for reptiles and prehistoric creatures laid the foundation for Cottontop Exotics. From an early age, this fascination was evident. Matt was practically born with a stuffed reptile or dinosaur toy in hand. Around age 4 or 5, his love for dinosaurs took off thanks to a birthday gift from his parents: a collection of original Godzilla videotapes. That early spark of fascination eventually led to his first reptile in 2009, a bearded dragon named Paul. Soon after, a feature in Reptiles Magazine introduced gargoyle geckos, and everything changed.
The Animals That Shaped the Journey
The first gargoyle gecko, Maya, had a bent spine and required special care. This experience marked the beginning of a deeper commitment to rescue, rehabilitation, and responsible husbandry. Over the years, the collection expanded through both purchases and rescues, building extensive hands-on experience and a strong foundation in reptile care.
The Birth of Cottontop Exotics
In 2022, during a challenging time both personally and professionally, everything came full circle. With most animals having passed due to age or preexisting rescue conditions, one remained. Quincy, a 13-year-old gargoyle gecko and the third reptile Matt ever owned. One quiet night led to a realization that years of knowledge and passion could become something greater. With the support of a spouse, a logo was created, the next expo was booked, and the first breeding male gargoyle gecko, Clementine, joined the collection. Cottontop Exotics was officially born.

What They’re Most Proud Of
Above all else, pride comes from working with animals, advocating for their well-being, and making a positive difference for reptiles and keepers alike at every expo. This is, and always will be, about the love of the animals.
